Abstract
We have determined the τ lifetime in e+e- annihilations at an average centre of mass energy of 42.5 GeV, using a pressurized drift chamber close to the interaction point. We find the lifetime to be (3.18-0.75 +0.59 ± 0.56) × 10-13 s. The charged weak τ coupling constant relative to that of the μ is found to be Gτ/Gμ = 0.94-0.09 +0.12 ± 0.09, in good agreement lepton universality.

N1 - Funding Information: The properties of the point-like leptons e, ~t and r are of fundamental importance for a theoretical understanding of the constituents of matter. Thus far all experimental evidence suggests that the e,/l and r have identical properties except for effects due to their different masses. However, the coupfing of the r to the charged intermediate vector boson is still much less well determined than those of the e and/a. The only presently accessible experimental way to determine this coupling is to measure the ~" lifetime. Earlier measurements \[1\]w ere limited by poor resolution near the event vertex. Recently, the MARK II group at SLAC has determined the ~-lifetime with improved vertex resolution using a high precision drift chamber \[2\].I n this paper we present a r lifetime measurement obtained in a similar manner using a high precision drift chamber (vertex detector) installed close to the interaction region in the TASSO detector at the PETRA e+e - storage ring. The upgraded TASSO central detector is shown in 1 Present address: Siemens, Munich, Germany. 2 Present address: CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. 3 Supported by the Deutsches Bundesministerium ftir For-schung und Technologie. 4 Present address: University of California, Santa Cruz, CA, USA. s Present address: Lufthansa, Frankfurt, Germany. 6 On leave from Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, Israel. 7 On leave from Institute of Nuclear Physics, Cracow, Poland. 8 On leave from Warsaw University, Warsaw, Poland. 9 On leave from the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, Supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. lO Present address: Glasgow University, Glasgow, UK. 11 On leave from University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. 12 Supported by the UK Science and Engineering Research Council. 13 Present address: Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne IL, USA. 14 Supported by the Minerva Gesellschaft fiir Forschung mbH. 1 s Present address: SLAC, Stanford, CA.
